Hot chocolate, toddlers and stinky socks.

We’ve been enjoying hot chocolate at early morning soccer matches on Saturday mornings. Tis the season.

Isn’t it such a Human thing to want the easy way out?! Why are we so afraid of hard work or commitment?

I admit when I signed us up for soccer a few years ago, I didn’t realise it would be such a big commitment. Gone are my Saturday sleep ins. Gone are my slow Thursday evening dinners. Now it’s the stress of getting all our soccer gear ready (“mum, where’s my shin pads?”) getting 3 kids in the car (that are usually going in all directions). It’s eating dinner out of a thermos, it’s loading the car with camping chairs, snacks and lunches. It’s bundling up in jackets and gloves and beanies. It’s cheering from the sidelines. It’s eating home made muffins and leaving crumbs all over the grass. It’s washing stinky socks and team shirts. It’s trailing a toddler running onto the field in the middle of a game. It’s admonishing a 6yr old who is just hanging around on the field and not focussing on the ball. It’s hiking down to the icky public facilities for a pit stop. It’s encouraging them to get out there and give it their best shot. It’s quelling tears when they don’t win. It’s juggling clashing game times. It’s memories. It’s a commitment. It’s often a challenge. It’s often hard to organise logistics and the mental load. But by His grace, he gives us so many good gifts. And I’m learning to see this as a good gift. And even the hard work it takes to get us all out the door, is a good gift. Thankyou Jesus for the fresh air and sunshine, and for soccer games and hot chocolate.

If we took the easy way out. We’d miss this, we’d miss His blessing after we work hard. We’d miss His love during the hard moments.

Life would be sad indeed.
